21 Dead in El Paso, Texas Domestic Terror Attack

Preface: this article will not name the shooter. We believe this only glorifies the killings in the shooter’s own mind, and the minds of others like him. Instead, we wish to celebrate the lives of the victims, and leave the murderer to be forgotten by history.

“We’re going to do what we do to terrorists in this country, which is to deliver swift and certain justice,”

U.S. Attorney John Bash

At least 20 are dead and dozens more are injured following the latest in America’s long trend of mass shootings. Saturday, 3 August, a 21-year-old man walked into a Walmart in the Cielo Vista area of El Paso, Texas with an AK-pattern rifle and murdered 20 people in cold blood before being captured alive by authorities. The shooter released a manifesto on a public forum shortly before the shooting, which cited racist and xenophobic motivations for the attack. He claims that his actions are a direct response “to the Hispanic invasion of Texas.” He continues, “They are the instigators, not me,” it says. “I am simply defending my country from cultural and ethnic replacement brought on by an invasion.”

In a press conference Saturday, law enforcement officials said they were exploring whether a four-page manifesto titled “[REDACTED]” posted to the extremist online forum [REDACTED] shortly before the shooting, was written by suspect [REDACTED], a 21-year-old white man from a town near Dallas.

Help us tell more of the stories that matter from voices that too often remain unheard.

[REDACTED] allegedly walked into a Walmart in El Paso late Saturday morning and opened fire on shoppers and employees. Security footage of the scene shows a man entering the building and holding a long firearm.

The manifesto describes a mass attack as a response “to the Hispanic invasion of Texas.”

“They are the instigators, not me,” it says. “I am simply defending my country from cultural and ethnic replacement brought on by an invasion.”

The manifesto includes overwhelmingly racist, xenophobic and anti-immigrant rhetoric. HuffPost has reviewed the manifesto but will not provide a link to it.

John Bash, the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas says the suspect will likely be charged with “domestic terrorism,” and “coercing and intimidating a civilian population.” Additional charges like hate crimes are also on the table, given the release of the manifesto the shooter posted on a public forum before the attack. Bash says these charges may carry the death penalty. “We’re going to do what we do to terrorists in this country, which is to deliver swift and certain justice,” comments Bash.

This attack is one of two that happened this weekend. Another attack in Dayton, Ohio left 9 people dead around 1 a.m. this morning. Currently the second attack is not known to be right-wing motivated. Despite legislative inaction on gun control proposals, Americans are growing more and more weary of the attacks.

This latest attack is just one in a string of attacks connected by one thing: radical right-wing extremism. Recently, the FBI released a report warning the US about the growing threat of right-wing extremism. Instead of heeding the agency’s warning, President Trump and other conservative lawmakers have instead targeted anti-fascists, the main opponents to right-wing extremism, drawing criticism domestically and abroad.

Update: as of Monday, 5 August, a 21st victim has died in the hospital.

SRA Podcast s2e10: Live From the SRA National Convention

Socialists from the nation over are gathered in Denver, Colorado for the annual Socialist Rifle Association’s National Convention. Faye, Alex Humva, and Breht O’Shea take questions from a live audience consisting of members and organizers of the SRA, America’s most popular armed, socialist movement.

The SRA was founded in 2016 and since then has spread rapidly. Chapters now exist nationwide, each with their own events and social media. On their website they have educational materials to help newcomers learn about both socialism and responsible firearms use.

The Socialist Rifle Association is an educational organization dedicated to providing the working class with the information they need to be effectively armed for self and community defense. This includes all manner of community defense, from the right of the working class to possess firearms to the ability to be well versed in the fields of medicine, disaster relief, logistics, agriculture, and survival skills. Our goal is to provide an alternate to the mainstream, toxic, right-wing, and non-inclusive gun culture that has dominated the firearms community for decades. We seek to provide a safe, inclusive, and left-leaning platform for talking about gun rights and self defense, free from racist and reactionary prejudices, while providing a platform for the working class to obtain the skills necessary for all aspects of community defense.

National Shooting Sports Foundation Revokes Membership of Socialist Rifle Association, Citing Support for Free-Market Capitalism

The growing pro-firearms non-profit Socialist Rifle Association is bristling after receiving a letter from the CEO of the NSSF, a popular alternative to the NRA, informing them that the SRA’s membership has been rescinded. The reason cited in the letter (attached below) specifies that the NSSF “embraces free-market capitalism” and “is aware of (sic) that your organization does not share these same values”

On Monday, July 22nd, the SRA received an email informing us that our membership in the NSSF had been rescinded and our $200 nonprofit membership dues were refunded. In a followup email, a representative of the organization claimed that the NSSF stands for “free market capitalism” and that a socialist organization being a member of their trade association would be contrary to their “core values”. Further, they claimed both publicly and in the followup email that the SRA had joined through their “automated membership system”, with the clear insinuation that they had accepted our membership without knowledge of our organization’s values and purpose.

The NSSF claims that the SRA was only granted membership due to their application process being automated. The SRA refutes this claim in their public statement, stating “we followed up with both phone and email correspondence to set up our account and spoke to an individual claiming the title of “Manager, Retail and Range Services”. While setting up our online account, an NSSF employee even created the temporary password “Socialist1″ for us.” The statement includes a follow-up email from NSSF Director of Public Affairs, Mike Oliva:

The public statement shifts the blame from the NSSF as a whole to the board members of the foundation. The SRA statement elaborates, noting that it believes their membership was initially called into question on online forums like the one at AR15.com. In an archived forum thread, user noFoTeeneR said “US taxpayers payed good money to train me to kill commies. I don’t intend to betray that by associating with them, in any capacity. Better dead than red.” Most, but not all, of the comments slammed the NSSF for granting the SRA membership. User texassooner said “More people with guns is a good thing [in my opinion].”

The SRA’s statement shames the NSSF for the expulsion and expresses a desire for acceptance of firearms and pro-Second Amendment beliefs among the US political left. ” The SRA not only represents gun owners who align politically to the left, but also minority groups and members of the LGBTQ+ community who feel unwelcome in many circles that claim to support the Second Amendment rights of ALL Americans. The people that make up these circles represent the same voices that seem to have scared the NSSF away from its initial decision to broaden its scope to include a large contingent of gun owners that feel voiceless in regards to mainstream gun politics.”

Socialist Rifle Association Kicks Off Annual National Convention In Denver, CO

The Socialist Rifle Association, a dues-paying, pro-firearms, leftist organization, is celebrating its annual SRA National Convention in Denver, Colorado beginning today. The movement has steadily grown in popularity, with chapters in many states.

The SRA seeks to educate the American Left about firearms, something they consider pertinent to the struggles of the working class. “We seek to provide a safe, inclusive, and left-leaning platform for talking about gun rights and self defense, free from racist and reactionary prejudices, while providing a platform for the working class to obtain the skills necessary for all aspects of community defense.”
