NPR’s Codeswitch: Is ‘Race Science’ Making A Comeback?

Our nation has long struggled with the idea of racial equality. It was founded on the principals of freedom, yet many of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence owned slaves. Long after the Civil War that ended slavery in America, women and African Americans were still not allowed to vote. Even when American freedoms finally applied to people of all races and genders, people have crawled from the woodwork to talk about racial pseudoscience. They claimed to be able to prove through the study of anatomy that the White Man was truly superior.

Those ideas have long since died out… or so we thought. NPR’s Codeswitch covers the return (if it ever left) of ‘Race Science’.

“After the Second World War, when we saw eugenics play out — saw the consequences of Nazi racial hygiene in the Holocaust — the world kind of took a collective intake of breath and tried to put its house in order. So scientists, policymakers, the United Nations all came together and decided race has no place in biology anymore. It’s not scientifically accurate. Race is not how difference plays out in the real world.

“But there were two problems with this. Number one was the hardcore scientific racists. This includes Nazi race scientists. So the ones who believed that whites were superior, that slavery was justified, that segregation was justified. They kept scientific racism alive within a small, but very active, global network.

“The other aspect is mainstream science. Did everyday scientists really abandon these ideas completely? My argument is no. They clung on to them partly because, of course, racism was still there in society. We still had racism all around the world, discrimination embedded in the structures of institutions. And that means even to this day, there are still scientists who, despite knowing better and despite being mainstream, good-hearted, well-intentioned scientists, still sometimes invoke race in scientific research, particularly medical research, when it’s inappropriate.

Best of the Left Podcast #1295: How Fascism Uses White Supremacy to Delegitimize Non-Whites and Enrich the Wealthy

Today we take a look at the racist attacks by Trump and his supporters against “The Squad” and how those attacks are in line with a long tradition of working to delegitimize and silence the perspectives of non-whites in America

The Best of the Left is back with episode 1295, and this one couldn’t be more relevant. Less than a week ago, a white supremacist terrorist walked into an El Paso Walmart and murdered 21 people. His targets? Mexicans, according to his manifesto.

The President’s response to the weekend’s shootings (yes, plural) pinned the blame on mental illness and the radicalizing nature of online communities like 8chan, where both the El Paso shooter and the Christchurch shooter frequently posted. The former applauded the actions of the latter, and sought to replicate his attack. Despite this, Trump and other Republican lawmakers are only officially seeking to classify anti-fascists as terrorists, and not white supremacists, despite the FBI announcing that this latest attack is, in fact, domestic terrorism.

Best of The Left #1294: Journalism is Under Attack in America Like Never Before

Today we take a look at the ways that Trump and his administration are systematically chipping away at the concept of a free press, a hallmark tactic of authoritarian governments everywhere.”

Today Jay! Tomlinson and the award-winning Best of the Left podcast are covering Trump’s war on journalism and journalists. Multiple times the nation’s 45th President has labelled journalists the “enemy of the people.” He frequently derides news outlets like the New York Times and CNN.

The President is a known fan of Fox News, a popular conservative news corporation. That has changed in recent weeks as Fox has begun taking shots at Trump, much to his displeasure.

SRA Podcast s2e10: Live From the SRA National Convention

Socialists from the nation over are gathered in Denver, Colorado for the annual Socialist Rifle Association’s National Convention. Faye, Alex Humva, and Breht O’Shea take questions from a live audience consisting of members and organizers of the SRA, America’s most popular armed, socialist movement.

The SRA was founded in 2016 and since then has spread rapidly. Chapters now exist nationwide, each with their own events and social media. On their website they have educational materials to help newcomers learn about both socialism and responsible firearms use.

The Socialist Rifle Association is an educational organization dedicated to providing the working class with the information they need to be effectively armed for self and community defense. This includes all manner of community defense, from the right of the working class to possess firearms to the ability to be well versed in the fields of medicine, disaster relief, logistics, agriculture, and survival skills. Our goal is to provide an alternate to the mainstream, toxic, right-wing, and non-inclusive gun culture that has dominated the firearms community for decades. We seek to provide a safe, inclusive, and left-leaning platform for talking about gun rights and self defense, free from racist and reactionary prejudices, while providing a platform for the working class to obtain the skills necessary for all aspects of community defense.
